Afternoon Tea Week 2016

We've given you a head start on finding your perfect Afternoon Tea spot

Since tea arrived in the 1670’s from China it has been part of our UK tradition for centuries, skip forward to the 1850’s and the story goes that Anna, the Duchess of Bedford of Woburn Abbey requested a small plate of sandwiches with a pot of tea creating another meal to add to the day. In its heyday Afternoon Tea was the hottest ticket in town. It was opulent, exciting and the place to be. There are some comparisons to draw on from the mid-19th century when the experience went commercial and left the stately country homes, at this time only the elite would benefit from the enjoyment of the dainty, delicate & decedent meal.

The ritual of afternoon tea owes its origins to Anna, the 7th Duchess of Bedford. As a young women in the early 1800s she lived during a time when it was common to eat only two main meals a day, with breakfast scheduled early in the morning and dinner occurring late in the evening. Weakened and irritated by hunger pangs each day, she decided to schedule time to take tea and snack each afternoon. This private ceremony was firstly done furtively in her bedroom, but over time well-heeled acquaintances joined her and the practice was perpetuated. Nowadays tea rooms and hotels across the country offer permutations of this centuries-old tradition.

We’ve put together a list of Afternoon Tea venues where you can enjoy a cup of Suki Tea too….and look who appears at the very top of the list, only Woburn Abbey, where Duchess Anna Maria, wife of the 7th Duke of Bedford, began the tradition of Afternoon Tea all those years ago.
