🍵JAPANESE DIARIES I PART 1 - WHY JAPAN

🍵Japanese Diaries I Part 1 - Why Japan
Japan has a way of moving fast and slowing you down at the same time.

Two weeks in Japan.
Hectic doesn’t even cover it, I’ve had so many meetings, trains, tastings, old friends, new faces. I’m in Kagoshima, my last spot before flying back and only just sitting still long enough to take it all in.

So why Japan?
It’s a question I’ve been asked a lot lately. And the truth is, this connection started long before Suki ever did.

Since art college I’ve been hooked on Japanese printmaking. Hokusai, Hiroshige, those clean lines and quiet details. I didn’t realise it at the time, but creating pieces of artwork in a patient, deliberate and considered way has shaped a lot of what we do at Suki.

We first came to Osaka in 2008 with our partners Yumeori, launching our teas at Hankyu Umeda. That was the start of something special and a friendship and working relationship that’s lasted nearly two decades, built on shared values of the love of tea, the craft of tea…and respect.

Coming back this year felt like closing a loop as I’ve been revisiting familiar faces, meeting tea farmers, and seeing just how much has changed (and how much hasn’t).

From the quiet tea fields in Kagoshima to the bright lights of Osaka, it’s been a mix of work, reflection, and beautiful sights. . . with a lot of green tea in between.

This post is the first of a few I’m calling The Japanese Diaries as there’s so much to share. Short reflections from a trip that reminded me how deeply Japan is woven into Suki’s story.
